DESCRIPTION
Offered here are the Liturgy of the Hours and the Mass, arranged as in the present Roman Liturgy of the Hours, but largely modified with resources from the Dominican Rite.
These include:
- The music for the Hours from the Dominican Poissy antiphonary (1335-45), supplemented by that of Jandel (1862).
I redistributed this to the most appropriate places, very often in place of the antiphons or responsories found in the Roman Liturgy of the Hours, in accord with its General Instruction of the Liturgy of the Hours, #274. One advantage of this is to provide Benedictus and Magnificat antiphons that match the Gospels of each Sunday of the three year cycle.
For the ferial responses in the Office of Readings, I used Dominican ferial responses for the first reading. For the second reading, for Sunday I used those of feasts of Christ, Trinity etc., for Saturday those of feasts of Mary, for Friday those of feasts of Martyrs, and Monday to Thursday those of feasts of other saints, thus using all the Dominican Responses found in the Poissy manuscript.- My rendition of the Hours and Mass chants in wave files — Click the image or the button to hear it. — If you use Real Player, you can watch the text while you listen.
Here I tender apology that I am not a professional singer, and the results are unequal. I have had some good days and some bad. You can sometimes detect fatigue flutter, sinus interference, and evidence of patches with my voice in different conditions. Later I may redo some of the numbers, but I cannot wait for a perfection that will never come, before releasing what I have done.
Note, however, that I mostly avoid the bane of most chant performances, including at the Vatican: tremulo and huff-puff. Chant should be legato, floating like a bird on air currents without flapping its wings.
Also note that the singing is faster than most chant recordings. This is my interpretation of the dynamic of Dominican chant, reflecting the early Constitution's phrase "breviter et succincte", which St. Dominic insisted on, to keep the brothers from tedium and give them time for study.- My translation of the Psalms and Canticles (with much inspiration from Dahood), arranged in chiastic format, both in English and in the original languages.
- Links to the Hausa translation of Psalms and Canticles by Musa Ɗanjuma and myself.
- Links to my draft revision of the Arabic translation of Psalms by Muḥammad aṣ-Ṣādiq Ḥusayn, guided by Serge de Beaurecueil, O.P. (Cairo Dar as-Salam, 1961).
- All the readings of the Liturgy of the Hours and the Mass in original languages.
- A two-year cycle of readings for the Office of Readings in original languages, following the approved Spanish edition found at mercaba.org.
- Liturgies for many Dominican saints. I did not try to include liturgies for the huge number of blesseds. They can be found in published editions.
Lastly, may I recommend the very rich site of Augustine Thompson, O.P., on Dominican Liturgy: http://dominican-liturgy.blogspot.com/.
